The Court Found Abuses. The Deadline Passed. The Ruling Is Still Secret.

On October 26, Senators Ron Wyden and Adam Schiff wrote to the Director of National Intelligence and the Attorney General demanding the release of a secret court opinion that, by their account, details serious abuses of Americans' rights under Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court issued it on March 17. A 180-day declassification review was supposed to put a public version in front of voters by September 13. That date has passed, nothing has appeared, and the administration is simultaneously asking Congress to renew the very authority the opinion criticizes.
